Value Chains

VACID Africa undertakes its development work from a value chains perspective. We work with communities to help identify the potential sequence of related business activities (functions) starting from the provision of specific in-puts relating to a particular product to support primary production, then such activities as may support the transformation and marketing of the produce, to the final sale of the particular product to the consumer.

In many cases however we seek to look at the concept from an enterprise perspective where a set of enterprises (operators) perform value chain functions (the producers, processors, traders and distributors) to transform a product through linked series of business transactions in which the product is passed on from primary producers to end consumers, with the needs of the consumers driving the initial production.

With our focus being agriculture, we use the value chain map as our standard tool to help understand the value chain. We help communities identify opportunities at each of the layers using our assessment of what commodity they may be engaged with. We are always conscious of the commodity chain as well as the service chain so that those not endowed with the physical resource that is normally depicted by the map benefit from the service provision.

It is the value chain that defines what technologies we shall integrate with what people do, and what community enterprises we of propose that the community identifies with. Our training programmes are tailored to help communities see the many opportunities there may be so that wealth is created at their level rather than selling their produce raw for others to create wealth as they keep producing the raw commodity.
