WHO WE ARE
VACID Africa is a non-profit social enterprise that focuses on the promotion of agro-entrepreneurship for the empowerment of communities, especially the youth, through integrated farm productivity and value chain development.


Our Vision
A world where food/nutrition, education/knowledge, and income/wealth are not constraints in the livelihoods of smallholder farmers and micro-entrepreneurs


Our Mission
To promote attainment of self-actualization of individuals and households by linking agriculture, food, nutrition, knowledge, income, and technologies through community enterprises - which are owned by productive resource owners (whether skills or physical resources) - and the employment of ICT4D, ICT4Ag, with Incubation driven enterprises

VACID Africa is governed by a board of trustees who meet quarterly per year to discuss and ratify any idea that will address the needs of the communities, especially the youth.

OUR HUMAN RESOURCE BASE

MonicaMonica Mburu – Chairperson VACID Africa Board of Trustees

Monica Mburu is a Food Scientist specializing in promoting food security through nutrition sensitive agriculture among the resource poor farmers in the region, focusing on both indigenous and exotic foods. After attaining her first degree, she worked at management level with various private organizations, and later joined the academic field, where she has been involved in administrative positions like heading institutions department, coordinating food processing income generating units, coordinating students’ industrial attachments, and has supervised various undergraduate and postgraduate projects. Monica has been conducting research to address various projects in value added products, food security, nutrition for poverty reduction geared towards Vision 2030 of Kenya. She has won various research grants from Food Science and Nutrition Network for Africa (FOSNNA), DAAD German Academic Exchange Service, Kenya National Innovation Agency, Inter-University Council for East Africa and National Research Fund, Kenya. She is currently working on various projects in processing and value addition of chia seeds and leaves to fortify local products. She is also actively involved in community based programmes where she coordinates utilization of houdsehold waste for organic farming for local food sustainability. Monica closely works with the food and horticulture industries in designing, planning and implementation of food control-related projects with emphasis on the food safety management systems including HACCP, ISO 22000, FSSC 22000, Global GAP, BRC and ISO 9001, among other customer related standards.

NdunguNdungu Kinyuru - Vice Chairperson VACID Africa Board of Trustees

Dr. John Kinyuru is a Food and Nutrition specialist interests in sustainable food sources and processing. He has over ten years’ experience studying edible insects as food and feed with a focus on their application to fight food and nutrition insecurity in Sub-Saharan Africa earning him international recognition. He has investigated edible insect in East Africa and their relation to human nutrition. He has coordinated studies on postharvest handling and processing of edible insects, processing the insects to nutritious, affordable, acceptable and safe food products for vulnerable groups’ mainly young children and people living with HIV. He is currently involved in studies that are evaluating determinants of consumer acceptance of foods in the East African populations with a view to identifying key entry points. John has wide experience in awareness raising, communication and outreach activities at the global level on the promotion of edible insects as ‘good food’, with a huge media attention generated on the topic in Kenya from 2014 onwards. John has successfully coordinated research grants on edible insects funded by EU, Danida, VLIR-UOS, the World Bank, NRF-Kenya among others culminating to receiving an award for proficiency in raising funds for research at JKUAT in 2017. He is the Co-chair of the Agriculture Task force of Committee on Open Data Science and Technology (CODATA) of International Council for Science (ICSU). He is also an Editorial Board member of the Journal of Insects as Food and Feed and has organized and chaired sessions in multiple national and international symposia and conferences

PurityPurity Wanjiku- Treasurer VACID Africa Board of Trustees

Purity Wanjiku is a Horticulture Expert with over six year six years cumulative experience. She has built her career in a variety of roles sincerely enjoying wearing her many hats. She has a growing work experience where no two work days are exactly the same. In addition to being flexible, responsive and cautious, she has an attention to detail especially when it comes to presentation. She is well equipped in business planning and preparation of annual reports. She has undertaken mentorship programmes for sensitizing the youth in promotion of agriculture and agribusiness in the urban areas. She brings in a wealth of experience in integrated pest management (IPM) and good agronomic practices.

PerisPeris Wangura – Secretary VACID Africa Board of Trustees

Peris Wagura has enormous experience both in public and private sector in public relations related matters in planning, publicity strategies and campaigns. She has been managing internal and external public relations activities like analyzing media coverage, dealing with enquiries from the public, the press and related organizations. She is good in managing social media platforms especially editing content for the website. She prepares, analyzes, records all procurement plans, budgets plans, reports for PR campaigns and organizing promotional events such as conferences, open days, exhibitions, ASK shows.
Peris is a highly dynamic resourceful corporate communication profession conversant with mentoring and guidance of the youths/community especially on presentations of issues of increased sustainable food production, income for poor rural households and sustainable management of natural resources. She has been overseeing the planning, implementation and monitoring the Upper Tana Natural Resource Management project (UTaNRMP) funded by Government of Kenya (GOK), IFAD and Spanish Trust Fund within Upper Munyu FDA.

MwendaMwenda Morris Member of VACID Africa Board of Trustees

Mwenda Morris is an expert in Systems Management including setting up and implementing world Class Operations Pillars with over 7 years’ diverse experience in the food industry. He is the Current Communication Secretary and a Member of Food Science and Technology Platform of Kenya (FoSTEP-K) and also a Full Member with National Quality Institute-Kenya(NQI). He is a certified ISO 9001 lead auditor. He has experience in designing, Planning, implementation and maintenance of IS0 9001, ISO 22 000, HACCP, OHSHAS, EMS management systems. Other areas of expertise include Value addition and agricultural extensions. Morris has worked as Food safety coordinator; he currently works as SHEQ Manager at Highlands Mineral water Co. Limited as well as a consultant in setting up management systems in various industries. He also sits in various Technical Committees at the Kenya Bureau of Standards.

 Kimani Wilson - Plant breeder and seed systems specialist

Kimani

Kimani Wilson has worked as a research assistant at Biosciences Eastern and Central Africa (BecA)-ILRI. He has immense knowledge and skills on plant breeding for agronomic performance, biotic and abiotic stress resistance and seed systems. At VACID Africa he brings his expertise in identifying suitable varieties for different agro-ecological zones and uses for farmers’ access, crop biodiversity conservation, promoting seed production and distribution systems and agribusiness skills.

 Ann Wairimu – General Manager

Ann

Ann Wairimu Mburu is the General Manager of VACID Africa. She has held various positions at the operational and strategic level delivering on school management including principal, deputy principal and head of departments in various schools across Kenya. Her responsibilities across the different roles have encompassed management and operations, programme planning and implementation, advocacy, partnerships and resource mobilization. Her other experiences include youth mentoring through guidance and counseling. She has passion for helping the youth to acquire skills in visual culture and agriculture.

Ephantus Kinyanjiu - IT/ICT expert

Karari

Karari Kinyanjui an ICT Expert with interest in ICT strategy and policy development, systems development and implementation. He has over ten years’ experience in systems development and implementations and over five years’ experience in ICT strategy and policy development. He has conducted research, developed and implemented a number of web based and mobile based systems. Karari has worked with the county government and universities, where he has gained extensive experience in implementing systems and worked with Institutions such as World Bank Group (WBG/IFC) in the Kenya Investment Climate Programme (KICP) and United Nations Development Programme(UNDP) in Support to Devolution Programme(SDP) . He is currently pursuing his postgraduate research with a focus on big data summarization algorithms.

Joseph Kabiru-Youth Development Specialist

Joseph

Joseph is an agribusiness expert with over four years of cumulative experience. He was the founder of the Nyeri student lead agriculture and a co-founder of vijana mashambani initiative, an initiative which encouraged youths to venture in agriculture. Through his participation in these initiatives, he has developed a passion for helping the youths appreciate farming as a tool for economic empowerment. He has immense knowledge on community mobilization for development and encouraging the youths to venture into agriculture. At VACID he will be tasked with creation of programs designed to enhance youth participation in agriculture and monitoring the welfare of the youths involved in our programs.
