VACID Africa - Zimbabwe is a non governmental organization established in 2009 under the auspicious of VACID Africa - Kenya.

VACID Africa - Zimbabwe is emerging from a background of economic recovery plans, high unemployment rate and unutilized resources.

Zimbabwe possesses natural resources that can develop the under privileged communities if we work together as a nation with the assistance of other African states.

Our nation in the past failed to witness the ability to research and develop the full optimization of natural resources as an income generating programme to benefit the under privileged communities. This failure has resulted in cultivating negative behaviour in conservation of natural resources of Zimbabwe and Africa as a whole.

Value addition encompasses defined processes that will contribute to the utilization of natural resources such as indigenous fruits to produce marketable products with added value.

Zimbabwe currently is tying up all efforts to re-build its economy and it is ideal time to incorporate agro-processing sector emerging from the ends of the economy. This will assist this sector to grow in the new economy hence creating an economy that recognises value for developing cottage businesses.

VACID Africa - Zimbabwe continuously improves its capacity development initiative vehicle so as to tackle the dynamics of operating in an environment of supporting sustainable development efforts of communities. This achieves effective segregation and management of value chain activities using our developed Management technique called Organizational Systems Reflex; this will assist communities to establish organizations that respond to the needs of the market effectively.

VACID Africa - Zimbabwe, works on a Community nucleus model for opportunities identification and development, we partner with Universities and colleges to develop identified potential projects. This will assist universities develop students with entrepreneurship basis, hence adding value to all sectors.

VACID Africa - Zimbabwe Programmes

VACID Africa - Zimbabwe, programmes are community focus based. We develop existing ideas or projects so as to add value to the value addition chain.

We link community strength in adding value to development of agro based projects. We train and establish resource centre for various programmes in different communities, we understand that the key element for sustainable community focus is rooted in knowledge dissemination; hence we incorporate ICTs in all programmes.

We establish communities' synergies by resources identification and linkages so as to ensure optimum provision of required resources. VACID Africa - Zimbabwe incorporates university students in research and development of community based programmes so as to equip graduates with entrepreneurship skills.

Role of VACID Africa - Zimbabwe in Programmes

VACID Africa - Zimbabwe will analyse gaps in communities and establish strategies to bridge such gap so as to achieve total optimization of resources.

Our Directorate is equipped with essential skills and energy to ensure the full utilization of resources, in our communities.

Directorate will formulate strategies basing on community operating environment. We will not forge in new agro processing concepts but to enhance the utilisation of available resources.

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors shall be the main decision-making organ of VACID Africa - Zimbabwe and shall have the powers of running VACID Africa - Zimbabwe in a manner that is not inconsistent with the Constitution and the laws of the Republic of Zimbabwe, where VACID Africa - Zimbabwe shall have its headquarters, and/or any country where VACID-Africa carries out its operations.

Mandate of VACID Africa - Zimbabwe

To accomplish its mandate VACID Africa - Zimbabwe performs the following portfolio responsibilities:

v Formulation of Agro - Processing Zones Policies.

v Prepare, implement and review of policies that facilitate value addition in rural areas.

v Mobilize resources for the development of rural areas into vibrant business communities.

v Formulation and implementation of strategies that ensure the development of communities in partnership with strategic partners.

v Co-ordination of value addition in communities.

v Formulate educational based value addition policies.

v Ensure full optimization of resources, and develop strategies to ensure the optimum utilization of resources.

Value Addition and Agro - Processing Zone Policy

Developing from these Principles VACID Africa - Zimbabwe, has managed to develop Value Addition and Agro - Processing Zone Policy to provide a framework for its operations for integration with all strategic partners.

This policy encompasses two major development vehicles Value Addition and Agro - Processing Zone.

Value Addition Policy recognizes that there are no sound policies that approach value addition in communities. This policy takes into account that communities must be developed by optimum utilization of available resources by processing such resources into marketable products during harvesting and post harvesting. This policy understands that communities have lost resources due to lack of defined agro processing of resources into marketable products. Value Addition Policy understands that effective channel to develop communities is not to introduce new ideas but to ensure that value is added to available resources.

Value Addition Policy explains that it is not the mandate of the producer of the raw material to process the marketable product but the producer must produce value added raw materials so as a to satisfy the value chain, we encourage the value addition chain to establish well defined contracts with producers of raw materials.

Agro - Processing Zone Policy caters for infrastructure developments and resources identification and allocation. The policy is geared to establish research centres in all provinces so as to meet defined demands. The zoning will help us in resource mobilization and assessing training requirements.

Principles of Value Addition and Agro - Processing Zone Policy

The basic principle for formulation of this policy is to bridge the gap between available resources and optimum utilization through value addition. Zimbabwe and Africa as whole have resources that are not fully utilized hence we lose income to develop our communities.

The imbalance has resulted in poor development of communities:

v Gender equality is affected

v Employment creation

v Poor rural infrastructure.

v The less privileged communities (rural areas) have a considerable percentage of +65% and within this percentage the greater part is constituted by women.

v Estimates prove that a family have distribution of resources up to 2 -3 years supply in a particular season, but these resources are not fully capitalized to benefit the communities.

ICT Synergies

Effective communication remains the only pillar for value added chains; the basis of value addition is the ability to co-ordinate players in the chain. This is accomplished through the use of available modes of communication.

The establishment of resource centres in all Agro Processing Zone so as to provide much needed information.

The following Strategies are proposed:

  1. Audio and visual: these vehicles that will assist remote areas where literacy levels are very low; the launching of radios and television sets will assist the value chain in co-ordination and mobilization of resources. This will also assist in disaster preparedness promoting awareness. The equipment will be positioned at all strategic centres such as schools, clinics, community halls and business centres.
  2. Telephones: Internet and basic telephone requirements are important if we are to develop value addition that is effective in accomplishing the stated mandates.
  3. Posters and Flyers: this is very effective in communities with high levels of literacy.

Resource Development

VACID Africa - Zimbabwe focuses on material and technology development in Agro Processing zones, the following are the elements of resource development:

a) Research and Development

b) Systems modification and design

c) Skills development

Research and Development

Value chain co-ordination is based on developing existing processing and research into processes that ensures full optimization of resources.

We are interested in developing experiences of communities and not to forge new agro business ideas, we understand that what they know is the key point to develop functional value chains.

The construction of cottage industries in rural areas will be based on strong basis of research into low cost building materials.

It is vital for VACID Africa - Zimbabwe to establish a strong understanding on how we can incorporate the communities into these research programmes by allowing communities to contribute to the establishment of such programmes.

As VACID Africa - Zimbabwe, we are strongly rooted into optimization of resources hence all our research and development will be strongly based on environmental assessment impacts. We consider water, energy and natural resources conservation.

Systems modification and Design

Community based system design will be the corner stone of systems modification and design; we will gather data from communities and incorporate them in our systems development strategies. This will ensure that we develop systems that are community oriented.

Skills Development

Communities will be engaged in skills development so that they will be able to meet the new demands in value addition.

Community Nucleus Model Approach:

Resource optimization is the major drive of our programmes, Community Nucleus Model Approach is an approach based on identifying community FOCUS, then develop that focus. It is resource consuming to start by fostering new focus, by this approach we identify existing projects or ideas and assist the communities to develop them. When we identify the focus of the community we then integrate with VACID Africa - Zimbabwe strategies to develop a workable process flow.

The community focus will remain the sole entity for the research and development in that area, we understand that many projects die at infancy because the communities are introduced to global projects that lack sustainability in communities hence our Community Nucleus Model Approach maintains the standard not of introducing new projects but developing current focused projects to add value by creating new opportunities.
